UK Foreign Sec tours DPA solar project – Kenya
On January 21, 2021 the UK Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, visited Nairobi for talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta, Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Raychelle Omamo, and other senior figures in the Kenyan Government.
During a packed one-day programme, the Foreign Secretary made announcements on climate change, and toured one of our DPA solar projects at Liquid Telecom’s East Africa Data Centre (EADC). EADC is the largest data centre in East Africa and forms part of Africa Data Centres, a subsidiary of Liquid Group. The solar plant will enable EADC to significantly lower their overall energy costs whilst at the same time reducing their carbon footprint.
Last year DPA and Mettle Solar (a CDC Investee) finalised a $1.2m joint investment into operating a 1MW solar plant powering Liquid Telecom’s East Africa Data Centre (EADC). The first phase of the solar system, a 136 kWh has already been operational for over a year, producing 193 200 kWh of solar energy per year. DPA has deployed with other installations being at Liquid Midrand and Liquid Cape Town.
The foreign secretary also announced a KES 7.2 billion (£48 million) of new UK climate initiatives for Kenya and other partners. It will help developing countries shift to clean energy and transport, and provide them with technical assistance and advice on disaster risk finance and climate risk insurance. Through CDC, the UK’s development finance institution, the UK government has invested KES 24 billion in Liquid Telecom to expand digital connectivity across Africa.
Francois Van Themaat, Mettle Solar CEO said “We are very happy and excited to be working with Norman and his team at DPA to help reduce the energy costs and carbon footprint of the largest data centre in East Africa. We look forward to building on this partnership with DPA and to keep on playing our part to assist businesses across the region with their energy needs.”
